Meet the People Behind the BOH Ocean Race Team

Founding Members

The Beacon of Hope Sailing Project is a highly personal project, founded and run by people who know exactly what it is like to go through a challenging time. As a result, BOH was born with one clear objective- To provide hope in the face of adversity. Our founders know just how impactful sailing and sports have been in their recoveries and wish for others to benefit from sailing and other water-sports activities on their journey to recovery.

Aaron Baxter

Race Skipper

Aaron is the Lead Skipper and co-founder of the Beacon of Hope Sailing Project. Aaron has always had an interest in anything he can take apart and put back together and an appetite for daring adventures. As a qualified engineer and self-confessed adrenaline nut, he is always

searching for interesting new projects to captivate his need for speed, danger, and engineering.

The hobby Aaron is most passionate about is, without a doubt, sailing. For him it is more than a hobby; it is an escape and an outlet and his desire to push sailing boundaries further is what powered the Beacon of Hope Sailing Project.

Thomas Miles

Team Liaison / Operations Officer

Tom is our team liaison and operations officer and co-founder of the Beacon of Hope Sailing Project. Toms main area of focus is the welfare of the team, supporting the relationships between the organisation and sponsors as well as running day to day operations.

For the past 4 years, Tom has battled with Leukemia twice, undergoing a broad range of treatments from radiotherapy and chemotherapy to a bone marrow transplant and CAR-T cell therapy. His experience with cancer, in particular his difficult recovery process, opened his eyes to the difficulties people face when trying to reestablish ‘normal’, re-integrate with society, manage relationships or return to work or education after a challenging life episode.

Victoria Wales

Race Co-Skipper / Mate

Former Sergeant in the Royal Army Physical Training Corps, Victoria Wales was one of the first women to achieve selection and pass all Infantry Physical Testing. An Instructor at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and an ex-National Athlete, Victoria’s entire world changed when she broke her back over ten years ago:” I lost everything, my career (both Military and Sporting) and I also lost myself; my identity. I have struggled with this aspect ever since. I have shied away from the spotlight, sport and physical fitness and didn’t think I would ever compete again.”

Shoreside Operations

The shore support team is the adhesive to our expedition. They are the unsung heroes of our project, ensuring our plan is executed properly, the project is running to schedule, the finances and administration are managed and our followers and media are always keeped up to date. During the expeditions they will manage every aspect of the race from the shore, ensuring we have the latest data, weather updates and information required to undertake the expedition. They will also co-ordinate the supplies we need, the relationships between our suppliers, charities and sponsors as well as ensuring our safety and co-ordinating rescue efforts in the event of an emergency.

This team will grow significantly over the coming months, adding engineers and safety consultants, professional yachtsmen & women, event/race planners and coordinators and a wide range and other highly skilled individuals ready to contribute to the success of the project.
